Background to Waterford Healthy Cities

The World Health Organisation (WHO) designated Waterford as a ‘Healthy City’ in December 2010. To achieve its designation Waterford has demonstrated to WHO that health is a core value for Waterford administration and that the vision, values and strategy for Waterford are translated into action for health through planning. ‘Healthy Waterford’ celebrates and supports the evidence that health is influenced by where a person lives, their income, their level of education, their culture and accessibility of public services.

In this context we are recruiting for





The term of employment is to end December 2017 and subject to funding may be continued for 2018


The Healthy Waterford Coordinator will be responsible to coordinate the development and implementation of the Health Plan for Waterford on behalf of the Healthy Waterford Steering committee.


Key areas of work include but not exclusive to:

·       Strategic Planning – work with key stakeholders in ensuring the WHO criteria for Healthy Cities is met and actions to meet Healthy Ireland Framework are achieved for Waterford


·       Coordination of agreed goals and objectives under Phase VI; build effective partnerships for the promotion of health based on knowledge, awareness and a commitment to addressing the key determinants of health.

·       Policy development – collaborate to influence policy decisions which impact on health e.g. Healthy Ireland Framework and Health 2020 and to update the health profile of Waterford as required.

·       Partnership – to liaise and work collaboratively with key stakeholders at local, national and European level including National Healthy Cities & Counties Network in Ireland.

A Third level qualification to degree level is essential in a relevant discipline e.g. health promotion, education, community work, public health or social policy.


The assignment is to end of December 2017 for 21 hours per week at equivalent to HSE, Health Promotion Officer Grade VI at a salary of €25,443 (annual salary).


All applicants must hold a full driving licence, be computer literate and possess administrative and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and work in partnership with various stakeholders including State and community groups.
