Launch of #CommunityWorks! Publication

Every day, across Waterford, our local communities are better places to live from the dedication and energy of people supporting each other through their local community groups. So much is planned and organised locally such as family fun days, supporting new communities, celebrating culture and heritage, learning new skills, picking up litter or simply gathering to have a cup of tea and a chat.

Joe O’Brien TD, Minister of State, Department of Rural and Community Development today (May 9th) launched a new publication from Waterford Area Partnership entitled #CommunityWorks!, as a tribute to all of the people involved in groups and organisations that support the community. #CommunityWorks! is a snapshot of the community groups across Waterford City and County who are supported by Waterford Area Partnership under the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) and gives an insight into the vision and activities of some of the community groups around Waterford. What is achieved through the power of people coming together and the enormous contribution they make to the lives of others is evident in the booklet.

From men’s sheds making Buddy Benches for local schools, to ladies’ groups making Blankets of Hope for cancer patients, from resident’s associations striving to improve their areas, to new communities seeking to preserve their culture and language, the team at Waterford Area Partnership applauds the many who give freely of their time, energy and creativity for the benefit of others.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor of Waterford City and County Cllr Joe Kelly said  ‘I commend all the groups for your time, loyalty, commitment and energy in making our communities the best places to live. Without all the volunteers and voluntary groups that we have in Waterford, the city and county would be all the poorer. I wish you continued success into the future”.

Eoin Ronayne, Chairperson of Waterford Area Partnership commented ‘This publication is an opportunity for us to give our thanks to each and every person, especially volunteers, who are involved in community groups across Waterford City and County. Our admiration for your work and commitment is immense.’

Through the SICAP programme, Waterford Area Partnership makes a significant contribution within the fabric of the community, providing programmes and activities and opportunities for people to make positive choices in their lives.

Joe O’Brien TD, Minister of State, commented, ‘I’m very pleased to visit a number of projects and initiatives in Waterford today where the commitment and energy of those working in the Community & Voluntary sector is palpable. I am particularly pleased to launch the #CommunityWorks! Booklet as it really is a true reflection of the wealth of work happening day in and day out to help make our local communities inclusive, accessible, and enjoyable places to live. The launch was held at the South East Technology University Arena and attended by representatives from many of the participating groups, with local councillors and staff from Waterford City and County Council.
